Building a Frenemy

I’m the developer of Allies: The Art of Betrayal, a strategy game of alliances and betrayal, and I’m building its AI players in the open. The goal isn’t one unbeatable AI. It’s a cast of AI players with real personalities, who cooperate when it helps them, compete when it doesn’t, and keep you guessing which one they’ll do next.

Every Frenemy Game is a test. I play against the AIs, break down their decisions, and figure out what to improve.

Scoreboard

1 Me
1 AI

Not the goal, just a way to see if the changes are working.

Frenemy Games

  1. 2

    Greed Check

    AI won

A new greed check: when one player holds more than their share of continents, the AI players now go after the ones left undefended. This time they won. Ben knocked me out with no points and took the game with 12 glory, even though Ben was eliminated too.

  2. 1

    The Baseline

    I won

The AI players have already come a long way, and this is where we start tracking their progress in the open. Every future game gets measured against this one.
